The Spanish Civil War – Dolores Ibarruri’s farewell to the International Brigades

Probably the single most heroic moment of internationalism and solidarity Europe’s left  has witnessed was the formation and intervention of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. You’ll all have read your Orwell and your Hemingway. But you might not have heard this – La Pasionaria’s farewell to the International Brigades.

There can’t be many of our generation who wouldn’t hope that, were the time to come again, they would have the guts to stand up and fight. This speech is the farewell to those of another generation who didn’t hesitate.

Make sure none of you walks past the monument on the South Bank in London without sparing a thought or two for those that fought. And if you want to know more, help out, or (gulp) buy “merchandise” (I kid you not), here’s the link for The International Brigade Memorial Trust.

Viva la revolucion.
